Analysis of Another Student's Thriller Project

Analysis of Another Student's Thriller Project
This project is titled 'Expendable' and was uploaded by William Dinsdale on the 10th of February 2016. Personally, I believe that the film is an ideal example of what I hope my thriller will resemble. From my own knowledge I know that the project was awarded a B grade, meaning I will be able to use this piece as inspiration for my own thriller, hopefully achieving a similar or higher grade in doing so.

Here the student has created their own fictional film studio, alongside a custom made logo for the studio. This may be something I also use in my own thriller, as it gives verisimilitude to the film, making the audience believe it could be a real film.

However, if I were to create my own title card, I would likely use a different font, as the sans-serif style used here draws no immediate interest to the film. In my own film, I would attempt to use a more eye-catching font in order to immediately draw the audience in, giving purpose to each aspect of the film.

Following on from this, the student has also created a fictional production company. Like the film studio used previously, I may also do this for my own thriller. However, I would spend a considerable amount of time on this, in order to ensure that the image looked profesional and believable, resembling a genuine company.

From the very start of the video, the audience can hear distant birdsong which fluctuates in pitch and volume. This immediately suggests that the film takes place in an outdoors environment, a suggestion which becomes clear as the audience sees the first shot of the film. The extreme low angle allows the audience to notice the undisturbed trees against the blue, picturesque sky. This therefore suggests that the film will take place in a suburban environment, an unconventional setting for thrillers. This immediately hints that the film may not follow traditional thriller tropes, making it more engaging for the audience.

The 360 degree pan used here is not used to maximum effect as the speed of the pan is too fast for the audience to notice any real detail, resulting in the shot becoming blurry and unclear for the audience. However, it can still be acknowledged that this shot is still creative and demonstrates the student's potential, meaning I may adopt a similar shot in my own thriller.

Here the shots of the forest surrounding fades to the film's title, 'Expendable'. Personally I do not like the title as it jars with the natural shots shown prior in the film. The title shows minimal detail and is used poorly to accompany the film.

Here the audience can see the first, and only character, shown in the film. The costume of the character immediately provokes questions for the audience as the viewer can notice large, cumbersome boots which jar against the sleek, sophisticated suit. This is an effect which I would personally like to use in my thriller, as it immediately creates a sense of unease and confusion for the viewer, even without dialogue or explicit detail.
